Sesiwn Ioan Rhagfyr – Dolgellau
January 16 @ 8:00 pm
An event every month that begins at 8:00pm on day Third of the month, repeating indefinitely
A traditional Welsh music session that meets monthly (usually 3rd Wednesdays) in or near Dolgellau. Please check monthly Event announcements for precise details.
The name of the session is inspired by Ioan Rhagfyr (1740 -1821), who was born near and lived in and around Dolgellau and is buried in the parish churchyard. He was one of the first known players of the flute in Wales. He also composed dance music for the flute. (cf http://yba.llgc.org.uk/en/s-WILL-JOH-1740.html)
The session was founded by Ceri Rhys Matthews in 2007 and originally held at Ty Siamas. It has since had several homes but always maintains a healthy attendance of enthusiastic musicians of all standards. Whilst it mainly reflects the inherited music of its locality and concentrates on Welsh traditional tunes, it is open to all kinds of music and acoustic musicians such as singers, flautists, fiddlers, accordionists, pipers, banjo players, harpers and so on. We often have 15-20 (or more) musicians attending from a wide area (Cardiganshire to Wrexham, Llanidloes to Caernarfon) – many travel 50 miles or more! Passing visitors are always welcome.
